Vitamin D deficiency is silently widespread in India. Despite our sunshine, 70-90% of Indian adults have deficient or insufficient levels. The reasons: melanin in our skin, urban indoor lifestyles, vegetarian diets low in Vitamin D, and increasing sunscreen use.
Symptoms are vague — fatigue, mood swings, low immunity, bone pain, hair fall, frequent infections. Most people don't know they're deficient until they test.
How much does a Vitamin D test cost in India?
| Provider | Test name | Price | Home collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large chain labs (Thyrocare, Dr Lal) | Vitamin D (25-OH) | ₹950–1,400 | Paid extra |
| Local diagnostic centers | Vitamin D (25-OH) | ₹700–1,200 | Often unavailable |
| AsliMeds | Vitamin D (25-OH) | ₹499 | FREE |
What does the test measure?
The test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], the major circulating form of vitamin D in your blood. It's the standard test recommended worldwide.
Reference ranges (ng/mL):
- Deficient: below 20
- Insufficient: 20–30
- Sufficient: 30–100
- Toxic: above 100 (very rare)
Most healthy Indians should target 30–60 ng/mL.
Who should get tested?
- Anyone with chronic fatigue, low mood, or unexplained bone/muscle pain
- Women aged 30+ (risk of osteoporosis)
- Office workers with limited sun exposure
- People with dark skin (more melanin = less Vitamin D from sun)
- Strict vegetarians and vegans
- Anyone over 50
- People with thyroid issues, diabetes, or autoimmune conditions
- Pregnant women (often retested every trimester)
How does home collection work?
- Book online → choose a time slot
- A trained phlebotomist visits with sealed, sterile equipment
- Sample takes 5 minutes — single blood draw, no fasting required
- Sample goes to the NABL-accredited partner lab
- Digital report via email + WhatsApp in 24 hours
What if my levels are low?
Don't panic — it's incredibly common and very treatable.
- 20–30 ng/mL (insufficient): 60,000 IU sachet weekly for 8 weeks, then monthly maintenance
- Below 20 (deficient): 60,000 IU sachet weekly for 12 weeks, then maintenance
- Below 10 (severe): doctor-supervised high-dose regimen
Retest after 3 months to confirm levels normalized. Generic Vitamin D3 60,000 IU sachets cost ₹15–30 each (vs branded Calcirol at ₹70+).
